You Can't Win for Losing

Sometimes you just can’t get a break in life.  For me this seems true more often than not. Much like most of the other ranters here on this site I too have an infection of the most wondrous kind.  Let it be known at the beginning that I enjoy in every way this wonderful “disease” that I have contracted.  The only down side is that sometimes just when life is going great, Fate in all of her cruel designs decides that now is the time to once again play her sadistic games.  And it is of these games that I wish to speak about.  Bear with me and I shall endeavor to explain this.  I am a simple man that enjoys many forms of entertainment.  The most prominent of these games are pool, chess, and the occasional video game.  While it is true that I posses no great amount of skill in any one of the afore mentioned games, I am not the worst player in the world.

However, lately lady luck has decided to abandon me in all of my jovial pursuits. Allow me to demonstrate an example.  I was playing a game of chess with Jen when it became necessary for me to leave the room for a small period of time. It should be noted that when I left I was doing quite well, but upon my return I found that my position had changed greatly and that I was now on the losing end.  And it doesn’t end there.  During a now all to rare game of cut throat, I wound up being the first to leave the game. This is a game that I have played many times since my coming to this college and never have I lost so quickly.  The really humiliating aspect of this last game is that I was legitimately killed by that same beautiful blonde that has for the 3 years that I have known her always claimed never to be that “good” at pool.

And yet my sudden string of loses continues on.  This past weekend John, the non-reddie music man himself, came to Henderson.  While here Jay and the rest of us used the projector in the dorm to use the playstation in a “big screen” style.  The game of choice when I played was Marvel vs. Capcom 2.  I have a deep love of this game and I am pretty good at it if I do say so myself.  So, as I’m sure you have all guessed no sooner than I play a game with my better half, who by the way had never played the game, I promptly get the worst beat down that it has ever been my displeasure to receive.  And so while it is true that I can’t seem to get a lucky break here lately, seeing the smile of pure joy on the face of the victor makes all the ridicule and taunting I have endured more than worth the price.  I have found that even though I am losing more games than is normal for my usually impervious Irish luck, I have for the past month and a half been having the best time of my life.
