Yep! I’m afraid it’s here, the beginning of yet another semester at college. Although the freshmen don’t fully understand what lies before them, the upper classmen know it all too well. Most of us come to college for the first time and move into our little shoebox dorm rooms but it’s your very own place, well yours and some other complete stranger unless you were chicken and roomed with a high school friend. Either way the first week after you arrive is filled with exciting events with carefree college students playing big money bingo or watching movies on the quad and you can’t believe it but college is the paradise you always wished it would be. Then classes start, and so you make it through your first week with no problem, save the dozen trips to the business office because they have a hold placed on your account for some mystical imaginary reason that you will likely never know. At any rate you’re still under the impression that this wont be so bad. Well being a freshman you might have gotten suckered into having 8 o’clock classes every morning and having gaps in between classes that are stretched throughout the day. Well as most return college students will tell you, don’t take 8 o’clock classes unless you have to. Some people are morning people and others like to get their classes done with by noon each day. As you advance through your first general education classes you’ll come to the point at small colleges like HSU where you have only one or maybe two different times to take a course and this will be true for possibly several classes in a single semester. Don’t Fret, by this time you have adapted to taking classes at any given time day or night. Just remember one thing, go to your classes, don’t ever stop going, for any reason whatsoever, don’t lie to yourself and say it’s no biggie if you miss class today, it is!

Moving this rant right along I’ll get to something college students of all levels can relate to and that is freezing. Freezing? Yeah well if you are mistakenly under the impression that its summer everywhere on campus you’re wrong. By now I’m sure some of you have started bringing jackets to classes and et cetera. I was in an 8 o’clock class of mine (yeah I know, way too early for someone who loves sleeping as much as me) and as my teacher prepares to start the days lecture she passes around the sign-in sheet and tells us that some of the lights that are sporadically turned on towards the back tend to get rather hot sitting near them and to let her know if it becomes uncomfortable. Well considering I made it to class with three minutes to spare (8 o’clock class, remember?) I was forced to sit in the back of the inclining lecture room. As I glance up I notice I’m directly beneath one of the lights, I shrug it off and sign my name to the sheet. By 9:00 with 15 minutes left I’m thinking mine must be broken or something and wishing the dang thing would explode and catch my notebook on fire so that I might regain the feeling in my hands. I don’t think I’ve ever been so cold at the first of September in my entire life, but I continued to scribble some notes as I hunched over my paper trying to stay warm but not feeling too optimistic considering my breath could be seen every time I go to exhale. Being cold has a different effect on others, but for me I usually become sleepy, or more accurately, I slip into a mild state of hypothermia. Although I have tried to fix this problem with self-control and have gotten to the point where I seldom start to doze off. Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather be cold than hot any day, considering you can only take off so much clothing but you can always find a way to stay warmer.

Perhaps I won’t get too busy or become too lazy and will actually have time and something rant worthy to write about without taking over a month this time. Well its time to get ready for yet another class so I leave it at that
