You will find chocobo breeding on many
pages, but it is very confusing and hard to understand. Some of it is even incorrect information. I figured it out on my own and made much simpler and easier instructions. I also have a world map which will help you while finding where each type of chocobo is. Click on the map to enlarge it. If you wish to use these instructions on your page, please email me first.
When you decide to breed your chocobos, you should be far enough in the game to have the airship. You should also have lots of money and lots of time. Start by going to the chocobo farm and buy 6 stalls from the man in the house. You are going to need them. Now you are going to need to capture a male and female running chocobo and a male and female walking chocobo. Check the map to find out where these are located. The chocobos that you catch in each of these areas are not necessarily the type you are looking for. Find out if they are by going to the boy in the chocobo stable area and going to 'move chocobos'. For the walking chocobos, the boy will say "This is a pretty good chocobo" and for running, "This is a great chocobo". When naming your chocobos, you should use numbers in their names indicating if they are walking or running, for example: Eileen1, Matt2. Once you have a male and female of each in the stalls, you should try to raise their classes by racing them at the Gold Saucer. This will give you a better chance of getting the chocobos you want. Once you have raised their classes, it is time to mate them. You will now have to get the right nuts. To get these, equip the yellow 'steal' materia and head up to the chocobo sage (marked 'chocobo sensei' on the map). In the grassy area around his house, try to get into a battle. When you get in a battle with the red dragon, use the steal command. Continue to do this until you get a Carob nut. Repeat the process 3 times, so you have 3 nuts. Now go back to the chocobo farm. Outside of the farm, save your game. Talk to the boy and select 'mating chocobos'. Select your female walking and your male running. Use a Carob nut. If you were sucessful, you will get a green chocobo! If you didn't, don't worry, hit the reset button, restore your game, and try again. It sometimes takes several times to get the chocobo you are looking for. Your chances will be increased highly if you raced your chocobos. If you get the green chocobo, go outside and save the game once again. Come back in and mate your male walking and female running. Use another Carob nut. If you are sucessful, you should get a blue chocobo! Make sure the blue is the opposite gender of the green. If not, reset the game until you do. Once you get it, go outside and save the game again. You will have to wait awhile before you can mate these chocobos. Now is a good time to explore the world with your new chocobos. The green chocobo can walk over mountains and the blue over rivers and shallow water. Try going to frog forest by Cosmo Canyon (marked on the map) with your green chocobo. You can race your new chocobos at the Gold Saucer. Also, try to catch some dashing chocobos (check the map). You will need these later. Once your chocobos are old enough, save the game and then mate the green and blue using your last Carob nut. If you are sucessful, you will get a black chocobo! If not reset the game. This chocobo can go over mountains and cross rivers and shallow water. While waiting for this chocobo to get old enough, you can race it, and catch a dashing chocobo (the boy calls it a 'wonderful chocobo') if you didn't before. Make sure the dashing chocobo is the different gender than the black. You will also need to get a Zeio nut. You will find these nuts North of the chocobo farm to the small island (marked 'chocobo seasoning' on the map). Get into a battle in the area of woods. You will fight goblins. Use your steal materia on them. If you are sucessful, you will get a Zeio nut. You will only need one. It may take several attempts before you are sucessful. Now you should go see if your black chocobo is old enough to mate. If it is, save the game and then mate it with your dashing chocobo. Use the Zeio nut. If you are sucessful, you will get a golden chocobo!! This chocobo can go over mountains and oceans! You can now get the most powerful summon materia in the game! It is at a small island, unmarked on the in-play map. It is located on the above world map. You can find it in the northeast corner marked 'KOR'. Congratulations! You have sucessful breeded your chocobos!!
